Facebook have introduced a new button which can ask a friend’s relationships status. The new ask button will only appear if a Facebook user has not specified if they are in a relationship.
The owner of the account will not be able to see the button, and it will only be visible to people who are visiting their page. If a user clicks on the button they will be asked to send a message along with a request to explain why you are inquiring about their status.
The new feature also allows Facebook users to ask for more personal information which has been unlisted such as email addresses, phone numbers, hometown, place of employment and current city. There is no way to remove the ask button from user’s profiles, so it won’t be long until users get extremely frustrated with this new feature. Some people don’t complete their personal information on Facebook, as they don’t want everyone knowing their business.
An interview with Mark Zuckerberg in 2010 stated: ‘We view it as our role in the system to constantly be innovating and updating our system to reflect what the current social norms are.’
Has Facebook created this feature particularly to live up to the demand of dating websites, or are they using it as a tool for marketers to advertise to a more specific audience?
